Back in 2006 a pilot project was pitched to Via Rail which was implemented in 2007 between Toronto and Niagara Falls. The addition of a baggage car outfitted with bike racks allows you to simply ride to the station, load up your bike, take your sea,t and enjoy the ride. When you arrive at your destination at the other end you roll out your bike and down the road you go.

Knowledgeable Bike Train staff on board are available to provide cycling maps and other useful information.

The photos are awesome.. so beautiful.... I love the idea of rails and bikes.. What a great adventure.
What a wonderful way to see the countryside, have a relaxing day, and get sme well deservied exercise all at the same time, thanks or thie info.
Joan - fall in Muskoka is beautiful ..... it's a wonderful time of year to travel the back country roads on a bike
Ted - as long as they occasionally lift their heads or stop along the way to enjoy the scenery ..... I've noticed some keep their head down look straight ahead an peddle like there is no tomorrow.
Kathy this makes so much sense. What a shame it hasn't been done more in the past. And who doesn't like taking the train? Just the thought of those extra cars off the highway is worth it.
Jenny - greening the world one car at a time.
Kathy: Now I didn't know that but now that I do, I'm booking a ride!
Thanks
Ty
Kathy,
What beautiful photos! Are those from your summer place?
I hadn't heard about this bike-train initiative and am very glad to see something like this available in Ontario. I guess it's time for me to buy another bike. ((-:

Kathy,
I just recently noticed that there are a lot of buses both TTC and Mississauga transit that have bike racks on the front. So, this is obviously quite popular.
One of the nicest bike rides in Ontario is along the Niagara parkway.
Brian
Ty - Your welcome ..... let us know if you are headed for Huntsville the week end of the 17th and we will see if we can't hook up for a mini rain gathering.
Jo - yes ..... the first photo is at the Brunel Lock just outside of Huntsville. The other two are at abeach on Mary Lake. We spend as much time in the area as business will allow and I try to post some of the things going on in the Muskoka area around us.
Brian - they have been there for a while but I see them being used more frequently now.
Having driven the Niagara Parkway many times I would agree that it would be a great ride ..... Niagara Falls to Niagara on the lake would be my preferred direction it's downhill (where it counts) at Queenston Heights.
That sounds marvelous--something my husband and I would really enjoy.
Lottie - I can see it catching on across North America ..... it would be a great way to explore the back roads of both our countries
I visited Huntsville last year good friends of mine live up there. What a great area. Thanks for sharing this info with us. Hope lots continue to enjoy.
Connie - I have not been to St. Marys myself But my web guy hubby has and he tells me it is a great area as well
